SOPHA
Software Receiver with Enhanced Integrity Concept on PDA for Safety Critical Hand-held Applications

Background & Objectives

The central objective of SOHPA is to develop a GNSS software receiver including WLAN positioning technology. The positioning element will be extended by an innovative integrity concept. The system will be designed to meet the requirements for personal moblity applications in special niche market domains. Respective operation areas for the envisaged positioning technology are therefore mountains, industrial zones, urban areas, and buildings.

Objectives

The purpose of the project SOPHA is to integrate a unique GNSS software receiver on a modern lightweight PC platform (PDA). Augmentation sensors (e.g. EGNOS) will be used to support the navigation solution with integrity and to improve positioning accuracy. For uninterrupted position determination, also in indoor environment, a feasibility study of a WLAN position update concept is also part of the project. Therefore, the project will demonstrate its capabilities for personal mobility applications in unfavourable environment such as urban canyons, mountainous regions, and even indoor.
