The GENIUS FP7 project is launching in Prague its ambitious professional GNSS training programme with a tutorial on the Fundamentals of GNSS in early March. The free, three-day course covers all the essentials that any professional involved in the satellite navigation and positioning sector needs to know.
The Prague tutorial will cover the ‘Fundamentals of GNSS’ and essentially provide a beginners’ guide to GNSS technology and use. The course will cover present and future systems and discuss the fundamental concepts of global positioning, covering all the way from signal in space, receivers and applications.
The course will combine lectures, seminars and practical ‘hands-on’ activities to ensure participants are thoroughly up to speed on the ‘how and why’ of GNSS technologies. Once the fundamentals are covered the later part of the course will discuss sources of signal errors and the various augmentation systems (such as EGNOS) that are available for enhancing GNSS services. The tutorial will conclude with a look to the future of GNSS and the European Galileo system.
Prague spring
The tutorial takes place on 4 to 6 March 2013 at the European GNSS Agency (GSA) Headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic. The three-day session is free, including coffee and lunches, but participants will be expected to cover their own travel, accommodation and other expenses.
The free tutorial is open to all, but numbers are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis with priority given to participants from companies and institutions based within ‘FP7 countries’ i.e. the EU-27 plus associated countries.
Instructors on the GENIUS professional training programme are acknowledged GNSS experts. For this first tutorial your instructors will be Professor Terry Moore, the Director of the Nottingham Geospatial Institute at Nottingham University (UK), and Dr. Fabio Dovis from the Politecnico di Torino (Italy).
Four further tutorials will be delivered in 2013 followed by five more in 2014.

GENIUS programme
The Prague tutorial is part of the comprehensive GNSS professional training programme organised by the GENIUS project. GENIUS is a coordination and support action funded by the GSA through the European Commission’s FP7 research framework programme. The project is coordinated by the GNSS Research Centre of Excellence (GRACE) at Nottingham University in the UK.
The three-year project is working to strengthen links between academia, research institutes and industry. Its activities include provision of world-class industrial training focusing on current hot topics in satellite navigation, and industry focused PhD scholarship programme, as well as support for post-graduate internships in industry and other measures to boost the employability and technical knowledge of PhD students in this burgeoning industrial sector.
