Services

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) consists of three core services:

  • Open Service: free and open to the public, the Open Service is used by mass-market receivers and common user applications;
  • EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS): offered on a controlled access basis (i.e. via the internet and mobile phones) for customers requiring enhanced performance for professional use;
  • Safety of Life Service (SoL): for safety-critical transport applications, including civil aviation, which require enhanced and guaranteed performance and an integrity warning system.

The EGNOS service area includes all European Member States.

Open Service

The EGNOS Open Service, available since 2009, improves the accuracy of such Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) as Galileo and Global Positioning System (GPS), providing European users with unprecedented positioning accuracy. The continuous monitoring of the EGNOS open signal has demonstrated that it improves the accuracy of GPS to within 1-2 metres and is available for more than 99 % of the time. In comparison, someone using a GPS receiver that is not EGNOS-enabled can only be sure of their position to within 17 metres. This level of accuracy makes the service ideal for such applications as personal navigation, the tracking of goods and precision farming.

Receiver manufacturers and application developers can provide their customers with the benefits of this improved level of performance simply by adding the EGNOS capability to their products. No authorisation or receiver-specific certification is required.

Safety of Life

When human lives depend on the accuracy and integrity of GNSS signals, the EGNOS Safety of Life (SoL) service provides the necessary level of integrity, continuity and accessibility. Available since 2011, the SoL service is primarily geared towards civil aviation and such applications as localiser performance with vertical guidance (LPV) operations. Beyond aviation, the service has potential applicability to a wide range of market segments, including maritime, rail and road.

EDAS

The EGNOS Data Access Service (EDAS) provides users with the same data broadcast by the EGNOS satellites (EGNOS Message) in near real-time. In addition to the EGNOS Message, the service also provides Galileo, GPS and Glonass measurements at all stations in the EGNOS monitoring network. Data is provided to EDAS users upon registration.

EGNOS + Galileo

With the addition of Galileo to the GNSS constellation, a portfolio of additional navigation services will be augmented by EGNOS. Learn more about Galileo services here.
