EGNOS Extension To Eastern Europe: Applications
Background & Objectives
The current project proposes a step forward in the activities being currently developed within the framework of the EEGS project – FP7 2nd call. The EEGS project shows that EGNOS service extension to Eastern Europe is feasible with minor modifications in the CPFPS algorithms (ionosphere algorithms) or by the addition of just 1-2 RIMS in Eastern Ukraine.
The availability of a SBAS signal in Eastern Europe is a major achievement and will be used by EEGS2 as a base on which to build SBAS applications.
Why this project is important for EGNOS/GSA/SatNav?
This project will contribute to the adoption of SBAS systems in countries where the EGNOS signal is not yet available.
The EEGS2 project aims to demonstrate the benefits of EGNOS, EDAS and Galileo through applications in the countries of Eastern Europe. The project has the following three objectives:
- To demonstrate through flight trials the benefits of EGNOS in areas of Eastern Europe where EGNOS is not available;
- To study the impact of SBAS technology in transport management;
- To promote EDAS, EGNOS and Galileo;
The first objective will be demonstrated through the deployment of on-board avionics capable of reading the magicSBAS message from RF, defining flight procedures and analysing the performances in real flights in four Eastern European countries. Demonstrations of Electronic Fee Collection, Pay as you Drive and Transport Technology Information applications will be undertaken in Ukraine.
The Eastern European countries will receive a real EGNOS experience from the EEGS2 project. They will be able to understand the performances, benefits and limitations of EGNOS and they will be totally prepared for the eastward extension of EGNOS in the future.
How does it work?
An EGNOS-like message is generated with the magicSBAS application in the GMV premises. This message is transmitted via the internet.
This message is used for road and flight trials. For the road trials the message is read via GPRS while for the fight trials the message is transmitted via a radiofrequency link in the surroundings of the aerodrome.
The next steps will be to focus on preparing the flight trials in all the countries and road trials in Ukraine.
Work performed & results
The first flight trials have been conducted in Spain and have demonstrated very good performances of the radio link. A rack with all the equipment has been developed and the system is ready to conduct all the flights in the countries in Eastern Europe.
