As part of the European Space Week, and under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, GSA joins Garage48, ESTCube, and the European Space Agency (ESA), in the SpaceTech Integrated Applications hackathon.
We are looking for engineers, developers, designers, scientists, experts, data analysts and marketers with various backgrounds ready to work for 48 hours on new applications using or combining Earth observation data, satellite navigation positioning systems, hardware and social media.

Satellite positioning is an essential service for many businesses and critical infrastructures that we often take for granted. Until now, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) users have had to depend on the American GPS or the Russian GLONASS. With Galileo, Europe’s new satellite navigation system, users have a reliable European civilian alternative.
Galileo provides improved positioning and timing information that greatly benefits European services and users, including the Location-Based Services (LBS) community. Being fully compatible with all existing and future GNSS, Galileo enables a more seamless and accurate experience for multi-constellation users around the world.
Hackathoners will work with Galileo-enabled devices, which includes the new Android featuring the so called “GNSS raw measurements” . We need creative heads to come up with innovative applications, that make use of the full breadth of Galileo’s capabilities. It can be anything. Just show us how your application can generate an added commercial or societal value by using the Galileo services. Applications include:
Fitness, sport and mHealth: fitness and mHealth applications rely on GNSS –in addition to other sensors- to monitor users’ physical performances;
Augmented Reality and games: the integration of positioning with virtual information allows the development of pinpoint services aimed at entertaining or informing users;
Geo marketing and advertising: consumer preferences are combined with positioning data to provide exceptionally personalised offers to potential customers;
Mapping & GIS: the enhanced processing power of modern smartphones, their portability and the location capabilities make them very suitable to develop Geographic Information System applications and create crowdsourced maps ;
Smart mobility: innovative GNSS-enabled applications contributes to the reduction of congestion while implementing faster, greener, and cheaper transportation options;
Enterprise applications: GNSS-based tracking solutions contribute to improving productivity and safety of workers through mobile workforce management solutions;
Social networking: the location of people is a relevant information around which develop specific services in social networks.
Innovation: Is this kind of solution already available on the market?
Market potential: Is this solution sellable after repackaging this idea into a real product? Is there a potential market demand/customer base for this product?
Galileo-relevance:Is the application making use of Galileo?
Completion level: Is the solution completed or could feasibly be completed?
Progress made during hackathon: Has the project advanced significantly during the hackathon?
If you are already working on an LBS-based app, or you want to test your skills while developing a prototype, the Galileo Hackathon is for you.
You can join as a team (2-4 people) or as an individual. Don’t worry if you don't know any other participants, you’ll find plenty of other teammates on-site!

Mobile phones and smartwatches, will be provided for the hackathon, all you need to bring is your laptop. Technical support will be available to answer any questions.

The winning team of the Galileo stream will receive tailored business consultancy and advice by Space3ac - the Polish 3-month long acceleration programme for start-ups exploiting satellite technologies. In addition, the winning team will be invited to “Space 3ac Demo Day", scheduled for 22nd of March, and present their idea in front of investors looking for promising and innovative business ideas.
