The European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC), formerly known as the Galileo Masters, is an international competition for projects with innovative ideas focused on the exploitation of the Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS). Since 2004, the competition has been organized by Anwendungszentrum GmbH Oberpfaffenhofen (AZO).
Regional challenges are hosted by local partners from all over the world and Special prizes are awarded by a broad range of GNSS stakeholders. The overall winner is selected among all the regional and special prize winners by an international panel of experts. The prize pool of the competition is worth a total about 1 million EUR, which includes business incubation, patent consulting, testing and marketing support, access to customer markets, and cash prizes.
Within the European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC), there is a special GSA prize for the most promising application idea for European GNSS. The European GNSS Agency (GSA) works with the European Commission on a range of activities aimed at helping European entrepreneurs and businesses - especially high-tech small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), business incubators, and related networks - take commercial advantage of European GNSS (EGNSS): EGNOS and Galileo . The market development and promotional activities help ensure that European industry maintains a competitive edge in the global satellite navigation marketplace.

GNSS is an enabling technology used in many different market segments. The European GNSS Agency promotes the development of applications that create demand for EGNOS and Galileo while providing economic and social benefits. Now it is time to fully exploit the potential of applications based on EGNSS. We are looking for innovative ideas for satellite navigation applications that will also reply to the users’ requirements. We will rank the ideas based on the following criteria:
- Technical / operational feasibility, maturity of the idea
- Benefits / market potential
- Innovation compared to current solutions
- Usage of EGNSS signals and services
- Contribution to EGNOS and Galileo adoption
- Demonstrations/Market trials for technology validation
- Business potential demonstrated by business model(s)
The winner of the GSA prize will have the opportunity to realise the idea at a suitable incubation centre of their choice within the EU28 for six months, with the option of an additional six months based on evaluation after the first period. After development, there will be demonstration of the EGNSS application.
Besides the GSA prize and other special prizes, you can apply for regional prizes too. ESNC overall winner is selected from all regional and special prize winners by an international panel of high-ranking experts.
