All transport sectors will benefit from GNSS services

All transport sectors will benefit from GNSS services

GNSS means a new infrastructure with downstream impacts as far-reaching as mobile telephony and the internet

GNSS technology is changing the way we travel from place to place, whether by land, sea or air, in remote areas or through congested city streets. Within a few years, mobile phones will incorporate global positioning receivers as standard equipment.

Applications will support a wide range of user groups. These can be split into two broad markets - regulated or unregulated (privately-driven).

Regulated uses:

  • Road Pricing
  • Rail transport
  • Waterborne transport
  • Aviation
  • Emergency management and law enforcement

Unregulated uses:

  • Location based services (LBS) and personal mobility
  • Road and multi-modal transport, and remote asset tracking
  • Indoor positioning
  • Technology and facilities development
  • Oil, gas, surveying, mining, agriculture

An outline of the applications across the various user groups is available here
